BARKATH CO-RO Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. was incorporated on 7th October 1992. It is a joint venture company of equal shareholding between KUMPULAN BARKATH Sdn. Bhd.the local partner and CO_RO FOOD A/S.

Kumpulan Barkath is a Bumiputra Company involved in manufacturing, distribution, import and export of food and confectionery products for the last 58 years. It also manufactures the famous “HACKS” brand of sweets. Dato’ Hj. Barkath Ali is the Chairman of Kumpulan Barkath Sdn. Bhd.

Co-Ro Food A/S, a company founded in 1942, is involved in the manufacture of a wide variety of fruit-based beverages e.g. juice concentrates, ready to drink, ice-lolly, health drinks etc. It runs highly rated research & development laboratories to meet customers requirements. Co-Ro Food is also the brand owner of “SUNQUICK” fruit juice concentrate.

Sunquick has been marketed in Malaysia for the last 35 years. Initially, it was fully imported by Kumpulan Barkath Sdn. Bhd.  An Exclusive Franchise was later granted to Kumpulan Barkath Sdn. Bhd. for local manufacturing at their plant in Mak Mandin. Due to ever increasing demand and insufficient capacity at the old plant; a newer, larger and fully automated manufacturing facility was proposed to meet this production challenge.

An agreement was reached between Kumpulan Barkath Sdn. Bhd. and Co-Ro Food A/S to jointly develop this business venture, whereby Co-Ro Food was to provide the technology transfer and production management of the factory whilst Kumpulan Barkath was responsible for the marketing and distribution of SUNQUICK in its franchised territories. This modern manufacturing facility was established and commenced operations in November 1993. It was the second joint venture plant under Co-Ro Food A/S; with the facility in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia being the pioneer plant.

There are now 18 manufacturing facilities around the globe for SUNQUICK, which is sold in more than 105 countries.  In Malaysia, SUNQUICK remains the brand leader in its category with more than 40% market share.

This state-of-the-art, fully automated SUNQUICK factory, which is the second largest in the world; was officially opened by His Excellency Y.A.B. Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohammad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia on 18th July 1994. Its production caters to the markets of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Other ASEAN countries e.g. Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia are served by local franchised manufacturing facilities in their respective markets.

Compared to the old plant in Mak Mandin, which was human resource intensive; the new plant has a production capacity that is FOUR TIMES as large with only HALF the personnel at 32 including the General Manager. This remarkable achievement has been attained by the extensive use of automation and high-technology where possible; resulting in the highest consistent quality and productivity. Facility operators are constantly trained to ensure adaptability and flexibility to modern management techniques.

In recognition of the factory’s efficient operation and consistently high quality output, the Board of Directors of Co-Ro Food A/S awarded the facility with the “Excellent Manufacturing Results” award; prized by SUNQUICK manufacturing facilities all over the world.

To remain competitive in the global market, the facility was also amongst the pioneers in attaining certification status with the new ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System; having upgraded from the previous ISO 9002:1994 standards. The management constantly evaluates and benchmarks its performance to meet targeted Quality Objectives of the company; thereby ensuring customers expectations are fully satisfied.
